lyrics

The roof that night
Held on through the gale
But the capsized cars
Out front had set sail
And 20 miles west near the 40 fathom line
A ship’s hull cracked
And disappeared in the brine
And the crew members too
Sank one by one

On the news they said
A storm like we’ve never known
But when the clouds all cleared up
Somehow we still had a home
We stepped outside
And we tapped on the ground
Tied our bootlaces up and then
We walked toward town
our feet on the road
Tracing lines on the road

The year it rained a thousand nights
Down from the sky the lightning strikes
We had to run for our lives
We had to run to go get dry

When I was 10 years old
I once got lost in a cave
But a tiny bar of light
Helped me then to escape
From the limestone smell
Out to a blanket of stars
Then from the road nearby
Came the sound of the cars

The year it rained a thousand nights
Down from the sky the lightning strikes
We had run to save our lives
We had to run to go get dry

Centuries from now in the desert heat
Two archeology interns working for free
Under wide brimmed hats
Sifting through layers of earth
Might find a tiny bar of light
For what it’s worth

They might wonder why
Did it come from a cave?
Did it fall from the sky?
Was this close to a town?
Was there an ocean nearby?
Was this somebody’s boot?
Was he part of a crew?
Is this a boat fragment here
Or just a piece from a roof?
Or what once was a car?
Maybe we’re thinking too hard

The year it rained a thousand nights
Down through the clouds
Came lightning strikes
We held our breath
And closed our eyes
We held our breath
And then watched the skies

The year it rained a thousand nights
Down from the sky the lightning strikes
We’ve had to run all our lives
We had to run til we got wise
